Data Center Planning

Tier Classification
Every data center is composed of electrical, mechanical, security, fire suppression and other systems that by their design either add to the center reliability or compromise it. The tier rating system is a method for classifying data centers based on up time or reliability with a scale of Tier 1 to Tier 4. The first order of business in designing a data center is to decide how much down time you can tolerate in your business and how much you can afford to pay for redundant systems.

  • Tier I is composed of a single path for power and climate control, without redundant components, providing 99.6 % availability
  • Tier II is composed of a single path for power and climate control with some redundant components providing 99.7 % availability.
  • Tier III is composed of multiple active power and climate control paths, but has only one active path, with redundant components and is concurrently maintainable providing 99.98 availability.
  • Tier IV is composed of multiple power and cooling distribution paths, has redundant components, fault tolerant and is concurrently maintainable, providing 99.9999 availability.
